Task Force Recommendations

On May 1, 2009, Hon. Jonathan Lippman, then-Chief Judge of the State of New York, announced the creation of the New York State Justice Task Force (the "Task Force"), one of the first permanent task forces to address wrongful convictions in the United States. Since then, Chief Judge Janet DiFiore (a former Co-Chair of the Task Force) expanded the Task Force’s mission to provide broader recommendations for changes to the criminal justice system to improve its fairness and effectiveness for all New Yorkers.

The Task Force is chaired by Hon. Carmen Beauchamp Ciparick (Ret.), former Senior Associate Judge of the New York Court of Appeals and Hon. Deborah Kaplan, Deputy Chief Administrative Judge for New York City, and includes representatives from all participants in the criminal justice system - including judges, prosecutors, defense attorneys, members of law enforcement, legislators, executive branch officials, forensic experts, victim's advocates, and legal scholars - from across the State.
