Task Force Recommendations

On May 1, 2009, Jonathan Lippman, then-Chief Judge of the State of New York, announced the creation of the New York State Justice Task Force (the "Task Force"), one of the first permanent task forces to address wrongful convictions in the United States. Current Chief Judge of the State of New York (and former Co-Chair to the Task Force) Janet DiFiore has continued the Task Force, which is designed to examine the causes of wrongful convictions and make recommendations for changes to the criminal justice system to safeguard against such convictions in New York State. Chaired by former New York Court of Appeals Senior Associate Judge Carmen Beauchamp Ciparick and Acting Justice of the New York Supreme Court, Criminal Term, and Judge of the New York Court of Claims Mark Dwyer, the Task Force includes representatives from all participants in the criminal justice system - judges, prosecutors, defense attorneys, members of law enforcement, legislators, executive branch officials, forensic experts, victim's advocates and legal scholars - from across the State.
